Why I Named My Marketing Agency After a Mountain
The story behind Eighty8 Agency and what Half Dome at Yosemite has to do with digital marketing.
When people ask how Eighty8 Agency got its name, the answer usually surprises them. It didn't come from a branding session. It didn't come from a focus group or a naming agency or a late-night brainstorm over a whiteboard. It came from a trail. A long, steep, grueling trail winding through one of the most beautiful places I've ever been.
This is that story.
My Love for the Mountains
Long before digital marketing, brand strategy, and content production became my world, there was nature. Hiking, exploring, and spending time in the wilderness has always been where I do my clearest thinking.
Away from screens, away from notifications, away from the endless distractions of the world. There's something about being outside, especially in the mountains, that strips everything back to what matters. The path ahead. The work required. The reward waiting at the top.
I've always gravitated toward mountain peaks. The challenge of a mountain that speaks to me in a way that's hard to fully explain. You see the summit from a distance, you know exactly how hard it's going to be, but you go anyway. And over the years, I've learned it speaks to how I approach business too.
But out of every trail I've ever hiked, one mountain kept standing out above the rest.
The Day I Climbed Half Dome
Half Dome is one of the most iconic landmarks in the United States. Rising 8,800 feet above sea level in Yosemite National Park, it's instantly recognizable. A massive granite formation with a near-vertical face on one side and a smooth dome curving up to a peak on the other. From the valley floor, it looks impossible.
The hike to the summit is 17 miles of steep inclines, switchbacks, exposed ridgelines, and relentless elevation gain that tests everything you have. The air was thinner and made it harder to catch my breath. My legs were fatigued and cramping. And I had ran out of water. Most people who attempt it aren’t fully prepared for what they're signing up for until they're already out there with no easy way back – including me.
I remember standing at the base of the final ascent looking straight up and thinking: this is the moment that separates the people who make it from the people who turn around.
The last stretch of the Half Dome trail is unlike anything else I've experienced. Steel cables bolted into the granite face guide you up a 45-degree incline of smooth, slick rock. There are no stairs. No comfortable footholds. Just raw granite, a pair of gloves, and every bit of grit and focus you have left after miles and miles of trail behind you.
Every step has to be intentional and surefooted. Every move matters. One slip and the consequences can be fatal. You either fully commit or you don't make it to the top.
When I finally pulled myself onto the summit, I remember the feeling clearly. Not just exhaustion or relief, but a deep sense of clarity and reward. The kind you only get when you've pushed through something genuinely difficult.
The view was unlike anything I had seen before. While I stood at the edge of Half Dome, 8,800 feet above sea level, and looked down it’s granite face toward Yosemite Valley, a wave of adrenaline rushed through my body and I thought to myself, “now this is why I do it.” That experience has stayed with me ever since.
The Moment the Name Clicked
When I started building this marketing agency, I spent hours on hours trying to figure out the right name. Strategy words, vision words, momentum words. Combinations that all started to blur together after awhile. None of them felt right. None of them felt like mine. And then Half Dome came back to me.
Its elevation at 8,800 feet, became 88. And 88 became “Eighty8”.
The moment that happened, everything clicked. It wasn't just a name anymore. It was my story. Something I’ve actually lived and earned. Not something I invented to sound good on a website.
And to me, that distinction matters more than anything else in branding. The best brand stories aren't crafted or synthesized. They're discovered.
Then I Noticed Something Else
Here's the part that really sealed the deal for me and honestly made me feel like the name was meant to be.
Take a look at the silhouette of Half Dome from the base. That upward curve, rising steadily from a wide base shooting upwards toward the sky. The shape of Half Dome is literally the shape of growth. Much like in a chart I’d show clients in our monthly strategy sessions. Leads, revenue, reach, engagement – all of which relate to growth.
I'm not going to pretend I planned that. I didn't. But when I really looked at it, I knew I had something that went beyond a clever name. It was a metaphor that was actually true. Because in marketing, the principles really are the same as the climb.
You start at the base with an honest look at where you are right now with no clear path to success.
But you map the route with a strategy and plan.
You put in the work consistently, intentionally, one step at a time. No shortcuts. No easy way around the hard parts.
You keep track your progress and adjusting when conditions change, never losing sight of the summit.
And eventually, with the right approach and the right mindset, you get there.
I've seen it happen. I've helped build it for businesses across different industries. Growth in marketing isn't magic and it isn't luck. It's a climb. And like every climb, it demands the same things Half Dome demanded from me on that 17-mile trail. Preparation, strategy, consistency, and the grit to keep moving forward.
What I Built and Why
I started Eighty8 Agency because I've spent over a decade at the intersection of visual storytelling and digital marketing. I also came from a medical and sales background. Two industries that taught me how to listen, how to communicate what actually matters, and how to perform under pressure. I spent years behind the camera as a professional videographer and photographer, working alongside business owners, learning what works from a visual and branding standpoint.
Eventually I realized the thing I was most passionate about wasn't just making great content. It was using that content to build something bigger. To take a brand from where it is, to further than it has ever been. That's what Eighty8 Agency is designed to do.
We're a full-service digital marketing and media agency working with businesses across the United States. Brand strategy, video production, content creation, social media management, paid advertising, and SEO. Everything a business needs in order to grow their marketing.
No long-term contracts. No hidden fees. Just honest strategy, bold creative, and a team of professionals that shows up for the hard parts. The same way I showed up for climb to the peak of Half Dome.
The Summit Is Closer Than You Think
I named this agency after a mountain I climbed because I believe the best things in business and life are earned through real effort, not handed to you. So if you're building a brand and you're ready to make the climb, I'd genuinely love to be part of your team. Let’s reach the summit together.
